Mount Girnar is a popular pilgrimage destination in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. At the peak of this sacred mountain lies the revered Dattatreya Temple, known as Datar Peak, which is the final destination for most tourists and devotees. This peak holds great significance for both Hindus and Muslims alike.

The terrain of this region differs from much of Gujarat, it is rocky, forested, and known to be older than the Himalayas. Mount Girnar is surrounded by spiritual energy and ancient architecture, making it both a sacred site and an adventurer’s delight.

Throughout the year, the region hosts vibrant festivals such as the Girnar Parikrama Festival (also known as Girnar Lili Parikrama) and the Bhavnath Fair, attracting pilgrims and travelers from across India. Other major temples near Mount Girnar include the Neminath Jain Temple, Ambika Mata Temple, Samprati Raja Temple, and Chaumukhji Temple. The mountain stands tall at 3,666 feet (1,117 m) and offers beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere.

Girnar Parikrama 2025 Dates:

For 2025, the Girnar Parikrama will be held from 2 November to 5 November. During this period, the region opens up for devotees and visitors, allowing access through the Girnar Forest area for a few days only.

The total distance of the Girnar Parikrama is approximately 36 km. The journey passes through the Gir Forest region, which is specially opened for pilgrims only during this festival period.

  • Bhavnath to Zina Bawa Ni Madhi – 12 km
  • Zina Bawa Ni Madhi to Malvela – 8 km
  • Malvela to Bordevi – 8 km
  • Bordevi back to Bhavnath – 8 km

The Girnar Parikrama happens every year on the occasion of Dev Diwali (in the month of November). Many pilgrims from Gujarat take part in this Parvat Yatra. The region is open only for 5-10 days during this festival.

Temples and Scenic Attractions on the Route:

The route passes through thick forests, small hills, and beautiful views. Notable temples along the way include Chandra Mauleshwar, Malvela, Sarkhadiya Hanuman, and Bordevi. Pilgrims also visit Suraj Kund and Nalpani Ghodi.

Experience the Spiritual Trek to Mount Girnar:

This region is also popular for its trek. This is the base point of the trek at a distance of 4 km east from Junagadh. It is called Girnar Talati. 

Trekkers usually start early in the morning or during the full moon night for a magical experience. The trek to the summit, leading up to Guru Dattatreya Temple, takes around 4 hours depending on pace and fitness.

The climb is steep with approximately 10,000 steps, offering rest points and refreshment stalls along the way. The sunrise view and morning Aarti at the Dattatreya Temple are unforgettable highlights for both trekkers and devotees.

When to Visit Mount Girnar and Girnar Parikrama Route:

Mount Girnar and all its temples remain open for tourists throughout the year but the main route among the Gir Forests opens up only during the Dev Diwali festival in November every year.

Guru Dattatreya Temple on Mount Girnar:

The Dattatreya Temple which is an ancient and top most temple on Mount Girnar. The Guru Dattatreya Temple is located at a hill located 10,000 steps on the mount. Guru Dattatreya is the human manifestation of the Hindu Gods, Brahma Vishnu & Mahesh.

Main Attractions and Temples on the Girnar Parikrama Route:

  • The parikrama begins from the Dudheshwar Temple at Girnar Taleti and the total distance is approximately 36 km.
  • From Dudheshwar Temple, pilgrims proceed through beautiful forest via the pass known as Intwa Ni Ghodi.
  • The next major stop is Zina Bava Ni Madhi, about 12 km from Bhavnath (Taleti). It is located beside the Hasnapur Dam.
  • Along this route, there is the Chandra-Mauleshwar Temple (also called Chandra Mauleshwar) where people often spot wild animals, including lions.
  • From Zina Bava Ni Madhi pilgrims proceed to Malvela Temple (Approx. 8 km).
  • Another route from Malvela goes through the Sarkhadiya Hanuman Temple, located inside the forest, where pilgrims can also visit Suraj Kund.
  • After Malvela, the path goes down through Nalpani Ghodi (also called Nal-Pani Ghodi), which is a slightly sloping and tricky section of the way.
  • Then pilgrims reach Bordevi Temple, the last major spot of the Parikrama, which is about 8 km from Bhavnath Taleti.

How to Reach Mount Girnar:

Mount Girnar is located just 7 km from Junagadh city in Gujarat and is easily accessible by air, rail, and road.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Keshod Airport, about 44 km away. You can hire a taxi from there to reach Girnar. Alternatively, visitors can fly to Rajkot Airport (109 km) or Ahmedabad Airport (334 km) and continue by train or road.
  • By Train: The Junagadh Junction Railway Station is the nearest, connecting the city with major towns across Gujarat and India.
  • By Road: Junagadh is well-connected by state and private buses, taxis, and rental cars. Road travel remains the most convenient and scenic option for pilgrims.

Girnar Ropeway 2025: Timings, Ticket Prices & Booking Details

The Girnar Ropeway, operated by Usha Breco Ltd., remains one of Asia’s longest temple ropeways. It was first proposed in 1983. It connects Girnar taleti to Ambaji temple within 10 minutes of ropeway ride. The ropeway is equipped with all the ultra-modern facilities, comfort to folks who are in any other case not able to climb 5000 steps to attain the summit.

      Thanks Bhavesh, your comments are noticed and well-appreciated. It’s about 110 km from Rajkot to Girnar temple, you can travel to Girnar temple from Rajkot in one day. It’s advisable to start your journey early morning like 5-6 am, to be back at 7 or 8 pm.

    A devotee can complete the Girnar Parikrama in a day. It hardly takes 10-12 hours to complete the Parikrama. However, if you are planning to stay in the jungle for one night, vendors at the roadside of the jungle may help you for the night halt.
